Strategy vs Tactics

As media consumers we need to always ask the "man behind the curtain" just what he's up to. This is critical to our not having "the wool pulled over our eyes." Magic is all about misdirection. The magician wants you to pay attention over here while the real deal is going on over there. 

Strategy: A plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim.

Tactics: An action or strategy carefully planned to achieve a specific end.

 We have to ask ourselves always how much "education" our young people are getting, not from the classroom, but from the "media." Most of us are "media illiterate." Yet we spend more time in front of the TV or going to the Movies than in any "classroom." We are being "educated" and "influenced" everyday we turn on "the tube." So what we watch and how long matters. The best thing parents can do for young folks, if they are going to watch TV, go online, go to the movies, listen to the radio, buy music, and they are, is to challenge them to not accept everything "at face value," but always consider the source, and question everything. There is no more powerful question anyone can ask than "WHY?"

This is the favorite question of any child, just ask any parent. Parents are often frustrated with their offspring because this "asking why" can be unrelenting. Until finally they might get to the point of saying, "that's just the way it is."

"Why?" 

"I don't know," the parent explains exasperated. 

"Well, why don't you know, mommy," the child asks, gleefully. Knowing all the while she is getting under dad's skin. 

As we grow into adulthood we "learn" to stop asking "Why?" And this is what the "magicians" who are in control count on. Once you stop asking why you've accepted the "magic" as real rather than a "trick" someone is pulling on you. Rabbits don't really appear out of nowhere. 

The media "magicians" know this. The industries of Film and TV are built on illusion. They are sure that most folks who go to the Movies or watch TV have long ago stopped asking, "Why?" They have become "grown-ups." 

The best tactic and strategy we adults can have is to take a page from our child-like selves and ask the mis-directors, whether in the media, politics, business, religion, education, everything that we call "the system," WHY, and not settle for "it's just the way things are" as an answer.
