The Autobiography of Obsidian Dumar
MAKE A MOVIE HAPPEN CAMPAIGN
Goal $50,000 for Screenplay Adaptation-of the book
Note: This "campaign" first appeared on the Crowd-funding Platform Indiegogo.
Who is Obsidian Dumar?
"He's all of us. I like to think of him as the new American "everyman." We're all trying to find out who we are. That identity changes over time, with age, with changes in circumstance how we see ourselves can change. But who we are at our core, our humanity is constant. This is the subtext underlying the story. And the timing couldn't be better for this story to be told as we have come to the end of the Mayan calendar, ushering in a time of reexamination of human consciousness and ways of being."
Walter Harris Gavin, the author, is a former Nationally Syndicated TV Host/Producer of The Gavin & Lott Show which helped introduce the Black Music Video form to audiences nationwide. This is his first novel. Both The E-Book and Paperback are available on Amazon.com
Log Line: Celebrated world weary author discovers a tattered storm-ravaged manuscript that may just hold the secret to humanity's continued existence... must decipher its meaning before it's too late.
Is Obsidian up to the task? Or does he let humanity be consumed by "dark forces" leading to Armageddon?
Obsidian Dumar III, world weary, Pulitzer Prize winning author, a professor of literature at Brown in Providence, RI is stuck. After instant success with his first book his publisher asked him to write a memoir. Like many an author before him he is finding it extremely difficult to write about himself, to tell his own story. Except as he ponders more about his life resurrecting events, images from his past, there have always been seemingly dark forces at play surrounding Dr. Dumar from a very young age.
Then the letter arrives from Lula Mae Sykes. A person who says they are related and his grandfather Obsidian Dumar has died and left him to be the caretaker of the family secret. It is this letter which sets him on his epic journey through time, space and culture. He follows clue after clue contained in bits ‘n pieces of his grandfather’s “autobiography.”
The only family he has ever known is the Griffins of Atlanta. The story is well known by now. Left on the doorstep of the Griffins a well-known, well-connected Atlanta family, the note tied around his neck attached to a string of canine teeth read simply. His name is Obsidian Dumar III.
Well it was certainly provocative for the time and place, mid 1940’s Atlanta, “White Family Adopts Negro Baby Left in Basket on Doorstep.” Many people would refer to him jokingly, derisively as The Black Moses. But this was no random choice by any means. He was left with The Griffins for a reason. Finding out that reason would now again consume him.
The story takes us from 18th Century Portugal, Ireland, and Western Africa of the old world to Montserrat, New Orleans, Atlanta, and The Piney Woods of Georgia in the new. We travel back to 2500 BCE as well as see events unfold in the recent past and in the here and now. Until finally, Obsidian’s destiny is revealed and he must chose to save himself and humanity in the process.
What We Need & What You Get
Now that the E-Book and Paperback versions are finished the time has come to take the next step, script development for the Movie. The TV Series, The Video Game, The Play all come later. This is a multi-year, multi-platform, multi-media undertaking, but the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. The producer has been to The Great American Pitchfest, Cannes Film Festival & Market, and NATPE Pitchcon in 2013 looking for production partners and plans call for a trip back to the Film Festival & Market & MIPCOM in Cannes in 2015 and also the American Film Market (AFM). But a screenplay is needed to talk turkey. That's where you come in.
The goal here is to engage a credited member of the WGA (Writers Guild of America) to adapt the Novel into a First Draft Screenplay. This is the necessary first step in developing "a package," to interest a major studio or production company, that would include a director and/or star(s). This is an epic story, to feature an international cast, with budget to match.
Even if the fundraising goal isn't reached money raised won't be wasted. I'm taking this show on the road to industry conferences, and markets, film fests, and book festivals here and abroad to "pitch" and secure a "development deal" at the very least. Any funds raised short of the goal or over and above the goal will go toward that end (see perks below).
As a writer/producer/author my goal in creating projects has always been to enlighten, inform, entertain and inspire. Very few projects coming out of Hollywood adhere to these tenants because they lack the vision or the "chutzpah" to trust that an audience will respond to new ways of seeing, new ways of being. In supporting this project you get to be a part of making history, changing the paradigm.
This isn't the first time that I've proved the naysayers wrong (see VIDEO). When MTV first began their premise was that "white" suburban households wouldn't respond positively to Black Music Artists on TV. So all of their "music videos" were of "hard rock white" acts. Was it stupidity? Ignorance? Or was it outright "racism?" Or was it a little bit of all three?
That attitude paved the way for BET on cable and The Gavin & Lott Show, the first nationally syndicated TV Series featuring Black Music Videos on commercial broadcast TV stations. MTV finally joined the club with Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." The rest is history.
As Ghandi said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Will you join me in being that change?
